Mary Warren was born twenty years before the Salem Witch Trials started. Mary Warren became John and Elizabeth Proctor’s servant girl after both her mother and father died. When this unfortunate event happened it left Mary with nothing, no land and nothing to claim as her own. Mary Warren was also known as an accuser and a confessor during the witch trials. After Warren’s parents died, some of Mary’s stress and traumatic thoughts showed through during some of the trials. During the trial of George Jacobs Sr. he mentioned seeing Mary’s mother. He wrote it in his deposition. In Mary’s defense she said that she had killed her mother and affected her sister, Eliz who apparently is deaf and dumb, dumb as meaning someone who can’t talk. When Mary was accused of witchcraft herself, she tried to find the public’s attention and began to accuse more local witches. Mary, due to her traumatic experiences started to have screaming fits in court; the judges would have to escort her out of the court room. Warren broke down so many times the magistrates wanted to meet with Warren and speak to her. After the meetings she began to attend, her fits were less often and she confessed to being a witch herself. Mary Warren was then put in prison. After being in prison Warren’s stories changed, she started to blame weird occurrences in Salem on the Proctors. Calling the Proctors, witch and wizard. After this Mary was faced with only two more examinations. Since Mary was a confessed witch she started to accuse others saying they had “alliances with the devil”. Mary saved her own life by providing evidence for the magistrates. As Warren’s testimony continued, court started to notice the thought of fraud. Though many thought this was fraud, the magistrates continued on with the accusations and began to encourage the accusers. Mary Warren; a large part in the Salem Witch Trials had, in many ways ruined her life and ruined many others too.
